In healthcare, operational efficiency and clinical excellence are driven by the quality of data. Yet, as healthcare providers scale and adopt modern systems, vital institutional knowledge and operational metrics often end up fragmented across legacy platforms, disparate cloud services, and disconnected financial tools.
To bridge this gap, Datatonic partnered with Silver Hill Hospital, a non-profit psychiatric hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut established in 1931, to execute a comprehensive Data Estate Modernization.
Coinciding with a dual-system migration—transitioning from their legacy Eclipsys platform to Meditech, and onboarding FinThrive for revenue cycle management—the team built a unified, modern data and analytics platform. This solution broke down operational silos, connecting clinical ops, finance, HR, and marketing data into a single source of truth.
Silver Hill Hospital took on an ambitious modernization: retiring its legacy Eclipsys platform in favor of Meditech while simultaneously onboarding FinThrive to manage its revenue cycle — two major transitions in parallel, on a fixed timeline, with continuity of reporting a firm requirement throughout.
The opportunity was to do more than swap systems. Reporting had grown up around the legacy platform over many years, which meant data lived in more places than the hospital wanted and integration work was more involved than it needed to be. Silver Hill chose to use the migration as the moment to consolidate — to come out of it with one governed, well-documented analytics foundation rather than a rebuilt version of what it had.
“Like a lot of hospitals, we had built up a reporting and metric structure over time that wasn’t as organized or as formalized as I wanted it to be. My goal was to bring real structure to it, so that every leader knows exactly where to go for the single source of truth.” — Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD, President & CEO, Silver Hill Hospital
Datatonic designed and executed a highly structured, agile modernization strategy, collaborating with Silver Hill to systematically ingest, model, and visualize its operational data.
Bridging the Legacy-to-Modern Gap with dbt and Looker
Datatonic first used dbt and Looker to rebuild and refactor the legacy Eclipsys pipelines for the new Meditech sandbox. By modeling Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADT) data early, the team was able to build and run functional Looker dashboards on sandbox data well before the live migration, giving hospital operations users hands-on training and familiarity with the new system.
Seamless Ingestion + API Integration
To bring in FinThrive’s critical revenue cycle data, Datatonic designed a robust connectivity architecture, deploying automated pipelines to pull data straight into BigQuery. Once ingested, Datatonic engineered custom dbt transformation layers to feed dedicated, high-impact Looker dashboards built specifically for the Finance team’s complex workflows.
Modern Engineering Practices + CI/CD
To secure the platform’s long-term stability, Datatonic established formal version control and implemented automated CI/CD pipelines. This ensured that any future code changes to the hospital’s data models would be automatically tested, validated, and deployed without risking production downtime.
“We came in with a hard deadline, two system migrations at once, and no appetite for disruption. Datatonic met that, with a level of responsiveness I’ve come to expect from our best partners.” — Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD, President & CEO, Silver Hill Hospital
The initiative brought Silver Hill’s analytics onto a single modern foundation — better organized, more cost-efficient, and built to scale.
